Sophisticated and feminine aren't often terms associated with leather. Prior to this season leather was all about a flagrant disregard for anything pretty or soft. It fell into two dramatically different camps: kinky fetish style versus tough biker girl. The new leather look is altogether more grown up, and dare I say it more ladylike. Cuts are less rock n' roll and more fancy fashion editor. Less Danny from Grease and more Carine Roitfield of French Vogue.

After much deliberation I have decided that this new take on leather can only be a good thing. I have busted a gut these past few months trying to mimic beloved Alexa's insouciant effortless styles and its tough going. If we're being honest, penny loafers only really look good on those with long Bambi legs and those high waisted shorts do not hold my tum in, they emphasise it. That girl has done more aesthetic harm to me than the United Colours of Benetton lime leggings I wore when I was eight. So quite frankly I'm quite looking forward to going for a more grown up ladylike look.

And the welcome sartorial icing on this hypothetical fashion cake is that much of this leather business is very flattering. Nothing like a leather pencil skirt to give you a figure like Maggie Gyllenhaal a la The Secretary.

So how to wear? The trick is to always dress leather down unless you want to look like you're off to a belated Halloween fancy dress party. Follow Agyness Deyn Deyn's lead and team a high waisted pencil skirt with an oversized vintage style tee. Slim fit leather trousers look great tucked into a white pussy bow blouse or go minimal with a simple loose shift dress and ballet pumps. Leather mini skirts are also acceptable if worn with an oversized, slouchy top or vest.

So dear friends embrace your inner vamp and let's get leathered. She's much easier than Alexa Chung anyway.

I loveeeee leather, makes me feel so rock and a little hardcore (and not a little bit kinky like how it used to be perceived haha!!) perfect for gigging it :) x
